Kommentar/Beschreibung

This course offers a focus on specialised English language for students of Freie Kunst and Kunstwissenschaft, with an emphasis on developing vocabulary, communication skills, and expressive style in artistic and academic settings. The course engages with both, the functional and imaginative aspects of language – exploring its creative and critical potential as a tool for artistic agency, discursive fluency and self-determination.In today’s international art landscapes, verbal agility and storytelling carry real weight and ask to be constantly renegotiated – whether in research proposals, interviews, funding applications, symposiums, publications, critical writing, curatorial conversations, or portfolio design. For visual artists, crafting a narrative around their work is crucial, not only to share intentions and creative processes but also to expose their stances. For art historians and educators, the ability to articulate and disseminate perspectives in a clear, personal, and informed language is equally essential. Throughout the semester, students will be encouraged to explore the nuances between what is said and what is meant, while experimenting with their own voice and position.Structured in themed sessions, the course integrates close reading, visual analysis, text discussion, and short-form writing plus speaking tasks in workshop form. These activities are meant to strengthen linguistic confidence in navigating and participating in the plural contemporary discourses. At the heart of the course is the understanding that language is never neutral: it shapes how art is perceived, interpreted, transmitted, questioned, and valued. As Ursula K. Le Guin reminds us: “To break a rule you have to know the rule. A blunder is not a revolution. If you don’t know the real rules, you may fall for fake ones.”A level of English B2 or equivalent is highly recommended, as the teaching will take place entirely in English.-------------------------------------Giulia Ottavia Frattini is a poet, writer, and independent researcher based in Berlin. Her practice weaves together writing, critical theory, and visual culture with a focus on linguistic displacement and the tension between voice and self-determination. Through anti-narrative forms and exophonic expression, she explores how meaning constantly reshapes itself within shifting epistemic systems. Her work spans poetry publications, independent curatorial projects, public readings, and a spectrum of contributions to international platforms, often engaging with hybrid forms. In 2023, she was a Visiting Teaching Artist at the Poetry Foundation in Chicago. In 2024, she joined the Poetry School as a Poetry Tutor, and in 2025 became a lecturer at HBK, Braunschweig University of Art.
